Seated Lion
Tang Dynasty

A rare painted pottery figure of a seated Lion.
Powerfully modeled figure well - carved with muscular haunches and backbone, the front legs firmly planted ,the open mouth roaring with bared teeth and curled tongue with large bulging eyes beneath heavily scowled brows,a large amount of red, pink, and other earthly colours still remain.
Such a piece is not uncommon to be found made of either stone or marble but very rarely do we see a painted pottery piece with such definite colour and characteristics.

Height 36cm 14 2/8 inches
